TAMPA -- What a difference a few days made for Russ Gerbers.

Running at the NCAA Championships in Ames, Iowa, Gerbers and his teammates had to face wind chills below zero, and the results showed as the Bulls placed 30th.

Gerbers found better results in warmer climates as he won the Times Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day. A USF senior, Gerbers' time of 31 minutes, 5 seconds in the 10K was a minute faster than his time at Iowa State.

Junior Andrew Smith led USF in Ames, finishing 102nd, while Gerbers was 140th. The Bulls scored 734 points, 651 behind first-place Arkansas.

On the women's side, USF was 30th with 682 points while first-place Colorado scored 117. The Bulls were led by senior Rita Arndt, who finished 139th.

USF cross country coach Kelly McDonald, however, received much better news this week, being named NCAA South Region Coach of the Year (for the women's team) for the third consecutive season.

USF's women's team won the South Region meet and advanced to the NCAA Championships. The women placed second in Conference USA behind Marquette. The men's team won the conference title and placed second in the NCAA South Region meet.

BULLS HONORED: After kicking the second-longest field goal without a tee in NCAA history, senior Bill Gramatica was named USF's Student Athletic Advisory Committee's Male Athlete of the Month. Gramatica, who will play in the East-West Shrine game, booted a 63-yard field goal against Austin Peay on Nov. 18.

For the season, Gramatica has booted 16 of 24 field goals, made 29 of 30 extra points and led the Bulls with 77 points. Also, senior offensive tackle Kenyatta Jones will play in the Blue-Gray All-Star Game on Christmas Day.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: The Bulls host the USF Classic this weekend at the Sun Dome. First-round pairings feature No. 14 Auburn against Ball State at 5 p.m. and USF against Arkansas-Little Rock at 7:30 p.m. The winners play Saturday at 7:30 p.m. after the 5 p.m. consolation game.

USF enters the tournament 1-1 after beating Central Florida 67-58 on Nov. 22.

Sophomore forward Aiya Sheperd led the way with a game-high 22 points and a team-high eight rebounds. She scored 14 points in the Bulls' 43-point second half while also contributing four steals.
