THE TOUR: Tarpon Springs Area Historical Society's annual Holiday Tour of Homes.

WHEN: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 8.

STARTING POINT: The Historical Society Museum in the former train depot at Tarpon and Safford avenues, where tickets are for sale ($12 in advance, $15 on tour day). Because streets are narrow and parking is limited near the homes, tourgoers are urged to park at the depot and walk to the homes.

INFORMATION: The historical society, (727) 943-4624.

THE HOUSES: This year's tour features a variety of homes, most of which have not previously been open to the public. Included this year are large Shingle-Style frame and Victorian-era houses, as well as smaller, vernacular-style bungalows.

The homes, which are north of Spring Bayou, on Grosse Avenue and on Tarpon Avenue near downtown Tarpon Springs, are in the National Register Historic District. All of the homes were constructed in the late 19th century or early 20th century.

"This year we wanted to feature homes from different parts of Tarpon Springs," said Phyllis Kolianos, curator and Historical Society manager. "Around Spring Bayou an early Victorian will be open, as will a large turn-of-the-century former home that now operates as an inn. We also have some lovely homes elsewhere that represent the diversity of Tarpon Springs' early residences."

Homes on this year's tour include many exceptional features, including fine wood moldings and floors, steeply pitched roofs, and round and turreted rooms.
