LECANTO -- You'll never be able to blame goalkeeper Trisha Chenowith for Lecanto's winless streak against Citrus.
Not after Friday night.
Not after the Panthers senior made 15 saves in yet another futile attempt to top the Hurricanes.
Citrus dominated the game in most aspects and could have won by a handful of goals. But thanks to Chenowith, the Hurricanes (7-1) were forced to sweat a little in a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
"She had a great game, but I think our whole defense had a good game tonight," Lecanto coach Kevin Towne said. "We had some opportunities. We took some hard shots, but we just couldn't put them in."
The Panthers (4-1-1) did have their chances to steal a tie or even a win, but Citrus keeper Laura Woythaler (seven saves) was as equal to the task as her Lecanto counterpart. This was especially true in the second half when Woythaler made crucial saves off point-blank shots in the 62nd, 68th and 75th minutes.
Athletically, the teams seemed evenly matched and the Panthers did a superb job of containing Citrus threat Amber Presnick.
But when it came to organization, especially on offense, the Hurricanes were superior.
Citrus outshot Lecanto 14-4 in the first half and, after an early Lecanto barrage, outshot the Panthers 10-6 in the second.
It was early in the first half when the Hurricanes got the only goal they would need.
After peppering Chenowith for the first 15 minutes, Citrus struck gold in the 16th when Sonya Segars connected from the far right side, hitting the upper left corner of the goal on a tough angle.
"The defender was coming on me and I had to cut it in and take a left-footed shot," Segars said. "I just looked up, saw the right side of the net open and I just shot."
