A closer look: one Hillsborough church

SERVICES: Regular Sunday services are held at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday school starts at 9:45 a.m. Junior and Senior Youth Ministries meet weekly in a shack with a TV and a Coke machine -- along with drinking soda and watching the tube, they study Biblical lessons. Ladies group meets twice a month to play bridge while couples meet for bridge once a month. Healing services are held the second Sunday of each month. Ladies Bible group for older women is held the first Monday of each month and Bible group for young married couples is the third Tuesday of every month. A circle makes quilts for babies at St. Joseph's Hospital and other causes. The Book Club and Bowling League meet once a month.
HISTORY: The church began as a mission in 1969 and celebrated 30 years as a church on Nov. 15.
LEADERSHIP: Senior Pastor John S. Hillmer took over a few months ago coming from a parish in Dallas. He received a master's of divinity in 1979 from a seminary in St. Louis. The Rev. Hillmer has been married to his wife, Janice for 18 years. They have three children, Olivia, 13, Ansel, 13, and Lukas, 9.
