Week in review
By Times staff writer LIFE SENTENCE: A judge sentenced James Lee Earley to life in prison for sexually abusing a girl from the time she was 7 until she turned 14 and became pregnant with his baby. Earley, 46, of Beverly Hills was convicted in October on a count of sexual battery on a child younger than 12, a capital sex crime that carries an automatic penalty of life in prison. NEW RULES: Inmates will continue to labor outside the jail despite two escapes from work details in a week, county officials decided. But the jail will take steps to prevent more escapes by ordering new, highly visible striped uniforms for inmate work crews and beefing up training for county employees who supervise inmates, said Charles Poliseno, the county's director of public safety. CRYSTAL RIVER PARK CLOSED: The city closed Yeomans Park last week after receiving reports that some people are engaging in sexual activity there. The park will be closed indefinitely, the hope being that people who use it as a place for sexual encounters will go elsewhere. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
