Prep Notes: Six three-pointers are just a warmup for one Chief
By ROD GIPSON Chamberlain's Otis White opened the season by nailing six three-pointers to lead his team to a 52-50 win Nov. 27 against Riverview. But none of his three-pointers were his biggest shot of the night. White's layup with three seconds left in the game proved to be the difference. White finished the game with 29 points. Wharton, meanwhile, benefited from 20 points from Jeff James and 15 from Maurice Johnson in a 70-65 win against Bradenton Pendleton. Johnson scored nine of his 15 points in the second half to secure the win and improve to 2-0. Sickles opened its season on a down note, falling 66-61 to Jesuit. GIRLS BASKETBALL: Wharton senior center Candice Dupree set a personal milestone in the Wildcat's 58-38 win against Sickles Nov. 26. Dupree scored 20 points to surpass the 1,000-point plateau in her career. She is the first Wildcat to do so. With the win, Wharton is 3-0 while Sickles slumped to 0-2. Gaither, meanwhile, jumped to 2-1 after beating Plant 45-34. Elaine Evans scored 19 points and Tasha Ross added six points in the Cowboys win. Other girls finals included Chamberlain's 70-45 loss to Riverview and Leto's 49-33 loss to Robinson. BOYS SOCCER: After notching three goals in the second half, Alonso posted a come-from-behind win against Chamberlain. The 4-3 victory gave the first-year Ravens their first win in the program's history. Alonso is 1-3 while the Chiefs are 0-4. Other boys action from last week saw Bloomingdale defeat Gaither (2-1) 1-0 while Sickles (3-2) got two goals from Nick Vermette to defeat King 3-1. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
