Governor, Cabinet laud plan for northwest HillsboroughBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published December 3, 2000 KEYSTONE -- An ambitious blueprint for controlling growth in northwest Hillsborough County has earned top recognition from a statewide program rewarding smart planning. At a ceremony in Tallahassee on Wednesday, Gov. Jeb Bush and the Cabinet issued a resolution marking the Northwest Hillsborough Plan's recent designation as a winner in the annual Sustainable Florida Awards competition. The plan seeks to create more livable communities in a 35-square-mile area from upper Tampa Bay to Odessa by promoting mixed-use developments of commercial and residential space while preserving natural habitat. The goal is to avoid sprawl that leads to traffic and pollution headaches. The plan was opposed by some developers who consider the standards too restrictive.
