TAMPA -- Denetrice Stinson and Aiya Shepard combined for 48 points, but it wasn't enough as South Florida fell to Ball State 84-80 in the consolation game of the USF Classic on Saturday night.

No. 14 Auburn walked away from the Sun Dome with the tournament title, defeating Arkansas-Little Rock 106-37 in the championship game.

South Florida (1-3) trailed by 20 with 9:52 remaining. But led by 11 consecutive points from Stinson and a couple of key three-point baskets, the Bulls pulled to within four with one minute remaining.

Ball State (4-2) held on, hitting 7 of 10 free throws in the final 55 seconds to seal the win.

"There is no dying in this ballclub," USF coach Jose Fernandez said. "They (Ball State) played 10 people 20-plus minutes. We're just so limited in a lot of things we can do right now (with just nine players). We can't get up and pressure and press full court and then get back."

Stinson, who is limited to 25 minutes per game because of back problems, finished with a game-high 25 points and had nine rebounds. Shepard added 23 points and six rebounds. Ball State had four players in double figures, led by Johna Goff with 21.

South Florida led 40-39 at halftime, but Ball State opened the second half with a 20-4 run. The Bulls improved on a dismal shooting performance Friday (31 percent), hitting 43 percent from the field, but only 11-of-26 from three-point range.

"This is a young team," Fernandez said. "We'll get better, that's for sure."

Auburn's Carol Smith, who scored a team-high 18 in the title game, was tournament MVP. The all-tournament team included USF's Shepard, Larita Spencer and Muci Haris of Arkansas-Little Rock, and Tamara Bowie of Ball State.
