Highs and lows

High

DERRICK BROOKS: The Bucs linebacker showed why he was named NFC defensive player of the month on one play Sunday, clobbering Bills quarterback Rob Johnson and then racing 30 yards to tackle Shawn Bryson. Our only question is what were the other 10 defenders doing?

COLORADO AVALANCHE: After their chance at the Stanley Cup final bounced off the post last season, the Avs appear to have come back stronger. Entering Friday's game against Dallas, they were on a 7-0-1 stretch that gave them a 17-4-3 record, the best start in the franchise's 21-year history.

SAN DIEGO CHARGERS: Tampa Bay Bucs, your 24-year-old record is safe.

Low

MNF CREW: The Packers, trailing by 10, drive deep into Panthers territory in the third quarter. Green Bay's Brett Favre then takes two sacks, moving the Pack out of field-goal range and killing a critical drive. And the remarks from Al, Dan and Dennis? Silence. Any other QB gets ripped for that. Geez, you would think the guy was Mickey Mouse -- his play Monday night sure looked like it -- the way he is treated by ABC's trio.

CBS: The network infuriated and frustrated Chargers fans by cutting away from the final 1 1/2 minutes of San Diego's first victory of the season so Dan Rather could provide a 10-minute special report on the presidential vote certification in Florida. The network apparently never heard of Heidi. Yes, the vote is more important than the game -- to some of us. Why not run the vote news in a crawl at the bottom of the screen? Why not go with a split screen? Why not wait a few minutes? The game was about to end, not the election. Hey, Dan, what's the frequency of updates at CBS?

TIME WARNER: Failing to pick up Wednesday's Lightning game in Hillsborough County is only the latest glitch to mar the doomed Lightning Hockey Network.

NFL: Yes, Tampa is the host city for Super Bowl XXXV. But there won't be roadblocks on the Howard Frankland and Gandy bridges or the Courtney Campbell Causeway. A lot of fans filling Raymond James Stadium will come from St. Petersburg and Clearwater, not to mention the beach communities and elsewhere. Sure, it's a body of water, but Tampa Bay is more. It's a community. It says so on the Buccaneers' uniforms. It should say so on the poster heralding the game.
