Garcia, Woods aim for $1-million

Sergio Garcia hit into the water for double bogey on No. 18, but still shot 3-under-par 69 to lead Tiger Woods by one shot Saturday at 18-under 198 in the Williams World Challenge in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Woods shot 67 to set up a showdown for the $1-million winner's prize.

Davis Love III, at 14 under, was the only player in the 12-man tournament within striking range.

MORE GOLF: Thomas Bjorn eagled the 17th hole for a share of the third-round lead with Ernie Els in the Nedbank Challenge at Sun City, South Africa. They were at 16-under-par 200, two shots better than Lee Westwood and Nick Price in the chase for the $2-million first-place check. ... Sisters Annika and Charlotta Sorenstam of Sweden shot 8-under 64 to increase their lead to three strokes at the Women's World Cup of Golf in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Australians Karrie Webb and Rachel Hetherington were in second place at 134. Sisters Marisa and Cristina Baena of Colombia and Peru's Jenny Lidback and Alicia Dibos shot 66 to move into a tie for third place at 138 in the $1-million tournament. ... Robert Allenby managed par 72 in a windy Australian PGA Championship, taking a four-shot lead, 11-under 205, into the final round. Steve Conran was in second. Andre Stolz (70-69-72) was in third. ... With 11 birdies and his first hole-in-one, David Gossett shot 59 to move from 129th place into a tie for 25th with two rounds left in qualifying school in La Quinta, Calif. The 1999 U.S. Amateur champion, who opened with rounds of 70-76-71, was at 12-under 276. Andrew McLardy of South Africa maintained his three-stroke lead at 261. The low 35 players and ties earn 2001 PGA Tour cards, with the winner getting a full exemption.

COLLEGES: The North Carolina women's soccer team carries an NCAA Tournament record of 65-3 into today's championship game at 3:30 p.m. in San Jose, Calif. The Tar Heels have reached the semifinals in all 19 years of the event, and will be playing in their 18th title match. UCLA is 7-4 in its NCAA history. The teams met in 1996 and 1999, with UNC winning both. ... Florida State's women swimmers were in second place and the men in third after the first day of the Georgia Invitational. The women compiled 221 points, one ahead of Clemson. Georgia was in first place with 406 points. The Georgia men also were in first (302 points), followed by Minnesota (279) and FSU (227). Both FSU squads finished first in the 50-meter and 200-meter freestyle relays. ... The Florida men's and women's teams finished the second day of the Alabama Diving Invitational with three in the top four. Nicole Bolt was second and Robyn Grimes was fourth on the 1-meter springboard. Reggie Coote was fourth on the platform.

FIGURE SKATING: Russia's Irina Slutskaya used an error-free program to win her first NHK Trophy in Asahikawa, Japan. Runner-up Maria Butyrskaya of Russia was angered, saying she deserved the gold.

HORSES: Bienamado beat Northern Quest by 3 lengths in the $400,000 Hollywood Turf Cup in Inglewood, Calif. The 4-year-old colt won $240,000.

PREPS: Columbine High won its second straight Colorado football championship, beating Bear Creek 41-7. The Rebels (12-2) won their first crown last year in a game that attracted national attention because of shootings seven months earlier. Players wore No. 70 on their helmets as a tribute to Matt Kechter, a junior varsity lineman who was among 12 students killed.

SKIING: Hermann Maier won his third World Cup downhill at Beaver Creek, Colo. ... Austria's Renate Goetschl brushed aside allegations of cheating to win a women's World Cup super-giant slalom race in Lake Louise, Alberta. Italy's Isolde Kostner accused Goetschl of removing a liner from her boots after a race to meet measurement requirements.

SPEED SKATING: American Amy Peterson won a bronze medal in 500 meters at the World Cup in Japan, finishing behind China's Chunlu Wang and Yang Yang. Canada's Francois-Louis Tremblay won the men's 500; Japan's Satoru Terao was second.

SWIMMING: Olympians Megan Quann and Ed Moses swept breaststroke events in the U.S. Open in Auburn, Ala. Robert Margalis of St. Petersburg won the 1,500 freestyle in a record 15:03.04. Michael Picotte of North Coast swam a 100 freestyle record 49:51.
