Nature notesBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published December 5, 2000 LEARN ABOUT DEER: John Morgan, biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, will discuss the life history of Florida white-tailed deer and current research and management tactics at 7 p.m. today at Chinsegut Nature Center, 23213 Lake Lindsey Road (CR 476), Brooksville. Call (352) 754-6722. SALT WATER FISHING WORKSHOP: A three-hour workshop focusing on salt water fishing will be from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the Homosassa Lions Club on Homosassa Trail. Capt. Mike Locklear will discuss fishing regulations; geography of rivers and waterways in relation to where the fish are; fish identification and size limits; techniques on how to catch all types of fish; and proper handling and releasing tactics. Locklear has more than 20 years' experience in local fishing and is licensed by the Coast Guard. The workshop is sponsored by Citrus County Parks and Recreation Department. Cost is $25; class is limited to 50 people. Call 795-2202. NIGHT WALK: Take a walk in the dark through a longleaf pine sandhill in May's Prairie at 6 p.m. Friday to look for night creatures such as flying squirrels, owls and bats. AUDUBON PARTY: Citrus County Audubon Society annual holiday party will begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Lecanto Senior Center, County Road 491 S, Lecanto. Bring a covered dish and place settings. Collections of non-perishable foods for Citrus United Basket will be accepted. Guest speaker will be Brenda Spilios, environmental writer. AUDUBON FIELD TRIP: Citrus County Audubon Society will take a field trip along the Ozello Trail at 8:30 a.m. Monday. Meet at the Circle K convenience store on U.S. 19 S and County Road 494 (Ozello Trail). From there, members will car pool to John Brown Drive, followed by a visit to Pirate's Cove park, lunch at Peck's Old Port Cove and more wildlife viewing at the causeway. Field trips are open to anyone interested in birding and wildlife. No charge. BIRD WALK: A walk through pine lands and wetlands to see which birds have taken up winter residence will be at 9 a.m. Dec. 12 at Chinsegut Nature Center, 23213 Lake Lindsey Road (CR 476), Brooksville. BUTTONWOOD BONSAI CLUB: The club meets at 9:30 a.m. the third Friday of every month from September through June at First Presbyterian Church, 1501 U.S. 19 S, Crystal River. The club also holds a non-formated meeting at Hobson's Herbs, 131 NE Crystal St., Crystal River, at 9:30 a.m. the last Saturday of every month. CELEBRATION OF LIGHTS: Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park will have a holiday light display inside the park from Dec. 19 through Dec. 26. GAMEKEEPERS SOUGHT: Wild Bill's Airboat Tours and Wildlife Sanctuary needs volunteers to help care for exotic animals such as lions, tigers, a camel and monkeys. TIRE DISPOSAL: Up to five passenger-car and small-truck tires per person will be accepted for free disposal at the Citrus County Landfill on State Road 44 between Inverness and Lecanto from Monday to Dec. 16.
