Mackovic is leaving TV booth for Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. -- John Mackovic, a TV analyst the past three years, was named Arizona's coach.

Mackovic, 57, returns to the school where he was an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 1973-76.

"The TV gig was nice, but it's not coaching," he said. "It doesn't have the same feel of coaching."

HEISMAN TROPHY: Three quarterbacks -- Drew Brees of Purdue, Josh Heupel of Oklahoma and Chris Weinke of Florida State -- and running back LaDainian Tomlinson of TCU were announced as finalists for the award, to be presented Saturday.

The four lead the balloting of 922 writers, broadcasters and former winners. Voting ends Friday.

COACH OF THE YEAR: South Carolina's Lou Holtz, Miami's Butch Davis, Northwestern's Randy Walker, Oklahoma's Bob Stoops and Oregon State's Dennis Erickson are the candidates for the American Football Coaches Association's national award.

WALTER PAYTON AWARD: Tailback Louis Ivory of Furman was named Division I-AA player of the year. The junior led I-AA with 2,079 yards.

JOHN MACKEY AWARD: Purdue's Tim Stratton is the inaugural winner as the nation's best tight end.

BOWLING GREEN: Notre Dame assistant Urban Meyer was hired as coach.

BRIGHAM YOUNG: School officials asked Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Gary Crowton to meet them Wednesday about their coaching vacancy.

CLEMSON: Mike O'Cain returned to his alma mater as quarterbacks coach. He was offensive coordinator at North Carolina this season.

GEORGIA TECH: Running backs assistant Bill O'Brien was promoted to offensive coordinator.

FLORIDA: The school seeks a sixth year of eligibility for injury-plagued center Zac Zedalis, a preseason All-SEC pick who missed the season with knee surgery.

MARYLAND: Montreal Alouettes coach Charlie Taaffe was hired as offensive coordinator, the Canadian Football League team said.

MEMPHIS: New coach Tommy West seeks an offensive coordinator, defensive line coach and quarterback coach.

MISSISSIPPI: Coach David Cutcliffe was given a two-year contract extension.

NAVY: Offensive coordinator Mike Vaught, offensive line coach/recruiting coordinator Gene McKeehan and secondary coach Charles McMillian were fired.

SAN JOSE ST.: The school said coach Dave Baldwin rejected its contract offer and that it is searching for a new coach.

Baldwin, reached at his home, said he thought the school was weighing his counteroffer and was stunned to hear he was out of a job. "This is utterly amazing to me," Baldwin said. "I was still in negotiations, I thought."

WISCONSIN: Wide receiver Nick Davis was charged with stealing a $4,000 television with help from a friend that worked at the store. The two face a $10,000 fine and up to 15 years in prison.
