Thrashers first: three consecutive wins

ATLANTA -- Chris Tamer scored with 1:01 left as the Thrashers beat the Boston Bruins 5-4 Monday night for a franchise-record third consecutive win.

"A year ago (Atlanta's inaugural season), we wouldn't have gotten a point out of this game," coach Curt Fraser said. "The guys are finding ways to win."

Atlanta led 4-2 late in the game before Boston's Sergei Samsonov scored twice in 2:25 and tied the score at 4 with 3:48 to play.

Tamer won it with his first goal of the season, a slap shot from just inside the blue line that beat Peter Skudra.

Atlanta's Ray Ferraro had his ninth career hat trick. The win moved the Thrashers ahead of the Lightning and into third place in the Southeast Division.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, PANTHERS 4: Florida coach Terry Murray was so desperate for a win, he risked giving host Toronto a two-man advantage in overtime.

Toronto almost had a power play after Robert Svehla received a holding penalty. But Murray asked the referees to check Yanic Perreault's stick. The stick proved to be too tall. Perreault received an illegal stick penalty, and the Leafs lost their man advantage.

Toronto would have had a two-man advantage if Murray's challenge had not worked.

"The Florida Panthers need to win some games," said Murray, whose team is tied for the second-worst record in the NHL. "We're getting into the second quarter of the year now, and if you're not going to show the players that you're going to do some things to win some games, then where are we going to go?"

Murray said he noticed the illegal stick early in the first period. Perreault said he didn't know the stick was illegal.

SHARKS 8, FLAMES 0: Seven Sharks scored as San Jose got its biggest road win. Patrick Marleau got the Sharks started with two goals in the first five minutes.

Calgary finished well short of its most humiliating moment, an 11-0 loss to Vancouver on March 1, 1992, but it lost for the seventh time in 11 games.

OILERS: Wing Mike Grier is out indefinitely after separating his right shoulder in Sunday's tie with San Jose, leaving the team without its second-leading goal scorer.

PENGUINS: Goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin, who has split playing time with Garth Snow, had surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee and will be out 2-4 weeks. Snow is expected to get most, if not all, of the starts until Aubin returns.
