Cloud of dust ends chase by sheriff's deputies

LACOOCHEE -- A 3-mile chase Tuesday evening ended when Pasco sheriff's deputies chose not to chase a car down a dusty dirt road.

Deputies said they tried to stop a brown Pontiac Trans Am that had a faulty license plate and was tailgating another car about 7:45 p.m. on Trilby Road.

They said the two men in the car fled from deputies at speeds up to 75 mph. The men eventually turned east onto Clay Sink Road, which is dirt.

The car raised such a cloud of dust that deputies decided to abort the chase. In addition to the tailgating infraction, the men would face charges of fleeing and eluding.

No arrests had been made Wednesday night.

Two suspects sought who robbed, attacked man

ZEPHYRHILLS -- Pasco County sheriff's deputies were searching for the men who attacked and robbed a 48-year-old Zephyrhills man early Tuesday.

Wayne Burns, who listed only a post office box as an address, told deputies two men approached him in a small silver car as he was walking from the Cumberland Farms convenience store at State Road 39 and U.S. 301.

He said the men got out of the car and hit him in the head with something. He said he was knocked unconscious and fell into a ditch.

Burns told deputies the men took something from his left front pants pocket, which authorities refused to describe.

He described the two robbers as black men, 20 to 25 years old, 6 to 7 feet tall and 180 to 200 pounds. He said they had stocky builds and short afros and wore pants and hooded sweat shirts.

No arrests had been made Wednesday night.
