Have an art weekend
This is the weekend to shop while you hop, party artily and put the kids in touch with culture. Bay area museums, art centers and galleries are going all out to bring you in to enjoy the arts while considering gifts of innovation and talent. Some venues offer discounts and refreshments. Daytime events, especially, are for the whole family.
Among treats in store, free unless otherwise noted, are:
Saturday, 9:30-5:30 p.m. at the Salvador Dali Museum, 1000 Third St. S., St. Petersburg: Open house featuring junior docent tours in morning, book signing by cofounder Eleanor R. Morse in afternoon. Free with paid admission (adults $10).
Saturday, 1-4 p.m. at the Tampa Museum of Art, 600 N Ashley Dr., Tampa: Celebrate the African-American holiday Kwanzaa through art activities, storytelling, music and dance.
Saturday, 5:30-9 p.m. at the Downtown Arts Association Second Saturday Walk, St. Petersburg: 21 galleries, including newcomers, participate in the monthly event. Stop at any participating gallery, such as those in the Gallery Central Arts District (Central Avenue from Fourth to Eighth Street), for a locator map.
Saturday, 7-10 p.m. at the Gulf Coast Museum of Art, 12211 Walsingham Rd., Largo: "The Gift of Art," interactive evening with artists present. Nonmembers, $5
Sunday, noon-4 p.m. at the Arts Center, 719 Central Ave., St. Petersburg: Hands-on activities for children, artists' demonstrations and puppets from First Night St. Petersburg.
Sunday, noon-4 p.m. at Florida Craftsmen, 501 Central Ave., St. Petersburg: Family activity -- make origami ornaments.
Sunday, 1-4 p.m. at the Museum of Fine Arts, 255 Beach Dr. NE, St. Petersburg: Tours, stories, activities for children as well as adults.
