Tampa on Stuart's busy schedule

Marty Stuart is a country music Renaissance man.

Not only is he an accomplished musician who has worked with everybody from Travis Tritt to B.B. King, but he's also a talented photographer, writer, film score producer and one of the foremost collectors of country music memorabilia in America.

In fact, he's so busy with outside activities that he hasn't released an album since 1999's Pilgrim.

His latest creative excursions include writing the preface to the new book Hank Williams: Snap Shots From the Lost Highway and producing and writing songs for actor Billy Bob Thorton's CD Private Radio.

Stuart, 43, has come a long way from the skinny 13-year-old kid Lester Flatts gave a job as a guitarist and later as a mandolin player.

After Flatts disbanded his group, Stuart married Johnny Cash's daughter, Cindy, and played in his father-in-law's band until going solo in 1985.

It wasn't until 1991 that Stuart found mainstream country success by teaming up with Tritt. The two men created the No Hats Tour in 1992.

"We truly became like brothers at that point and have been ever since," Tritt recently told the St. Petersburg Times.

They met in 1991 when Tritt was recording the album It's All About to Change.

"Marty sent over this song that he had just co-written called The Whiskey Ain't Working. We cut it and ended up calling him in to play guitar on it," Tritt said. "And while he was there, my producer asked Marty to sing a verse. He was reluctant to do that, but he did it and it was fabulous, and Marty and Travis as a duet was born."

Tritt and Stuart's collaboration earned a Grammy and a Country Music Association Award.

Stuart, now married to fellow country singer Connie Smith, is the president of the Country Music Foundation. Part of his extensive collection of clothes, instruments and personal effects belonging to legendary country music performers -- including Hank Williams, Patsy Cline and others -- is on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville.

Stuart performs at 10:30 p.m. Saturday at the Roundup, 13918 W Hillsborough, Tampa. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 day of show, (813) 855-1229.

Flavor of the evening: Vanilla Fudge

Vanilla Fudge got its start in the late 1960s making heavy psychedelic music. With guitars, organs and layers of layers of sonic excess, the act, featuring drummer Carmine Appice, was known more for its production than its tunes. The Fudge scored an early hit with an unlikely, dirgelike cover of the Supremes' You Keep Me Hangin' On. The band disbanded in 1970 but has regrouped recently, with Appice still in the fold, to the delight of old fans.

Vanilla Fudge performs with the Livesays at 8 p.m. Saturday at Bourbon Street Night Club, 4331 U.S. 19, New Port Richey. $15 advance, $20 at the door. (727) 843-0686.
