Big-screen "Dungeons' arrives
Dungeons and Dragons (PG-13) opens Friday with all the excitement a 25-year-old parlor game for fantasy freaks can muster. Oscar winner Jeremy Irons (Reversal of Fortune) brings his peculiar brand of malevolence to the role of Profion, an evil tyrant scheming to take control over the peaceful kingdom of Izmer. All Profion needs is a magical scepter held by Empress Savina (Thora Birch, American Beauty), who can ward off his attacks if she can first locate the mystical Rod of Savrille. Her quest is assisted by a pair of thieves named Ridley (Justin Whalin) and Snails (Marlon Wayans), plus assorted dwarfs, elves and dragons. You can't tell the players without a scorecard, or at least a rules handbook. Dice not included.
