    Discrimination complaint against county settled

CLEARWATER -- Pinellas County has settled a discrimination complaint filed against it by former parks director Diana Kyle, who was fired in September 2000. Kyle filed a sex discrimination complaint with the Florida Commission on Human Relations after interim county administrator Gay Lancaster fired her for insubordination. Kyle was let go after the county's top brass learned she secretly drew up a plan with the parks advisory board to reduce the county administrator's authority over the parks department. County officials would not disclose the settlement, saying it is confidential until Kyle formally withdraws her complaint. "There is cash involved, yes," said senior assistant county attorney Bill Falkner. "She's not paying us, that's right." Falkner said the county did not prepare a response to the complaint, but "the county would certainly deny we were engaged in sex discrimination with her." Kyle's attorney Ed Foreman declined to comment.
