TAMPA -- With victories against Cameron University (Okla.) and Glenville State College (W.Va.) at the Disney Classic in Lake Buena Vista, the UT women's basketball team continued to break out of its slump and improved to 4-2 on the season.
The Spartans had lost two of their first three games.
Tampa defeated Cameron 72-66 on the strength of junior guard Exzavia Cunningham, who had 28 points and four assists. Freshman guard Juanita McClinton notched 12 points and seven steals.
In beating Glenville 83-65, center Jessie McDowell netted 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Sophomore forward Yushonda Morse and senior guard Nichole Blair added 16 points each.
The Spartans play six of their next seven games at home beginning with Puerto Rico-Bayaman on Dec. 14. That string includes the Jan. 9 Sunshine State Conference opener with Rollins, ranked 13th in Division II.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: The Spartans placed three players on the National Soccer Coaches of Association of America Division II All-South Region teams.
Junior defender Ginger Lynn was named to the first team while senior midfielder Stacey Estes and senior defender Emma Carlsson were second-team selections.
Lynn and Carlsson anchored the defense for the Spartans, who went 11-7 overall and finished 4-2 for a second-place showing in the SSC. Estes started all 18 games, scoring twice and assisting on three other scores.
CROSS COUNTRY: Freshman Dee Dee Haefling placed 59th and senior Tracy Buxton placed 102nd among 183 runners at the NCAA Division II Nationals on Nov. 24. Haefling, who also earned All-SSC recognition, finished in 23 minutes, 22 seconds. Buxton, meanwhile, the SSC Runner of the Year, ran 24:09.
