Shepard scores 21 in USF win

TAMPA -- Aiya Shepard scored a game-high 21 points and South Florida defeated Jacksonville 64-49 Thursday night at the Sun Dome.

In the first half, the Bulls shot 44.8 percent, including 3 of 6 three-pointers, and committed five turnovers. USF led 35-19 and ended a three-game losing streak.

"I thought we ... really played well in the first half," acting coach Jose Fernandez said. "We shot the ball a little better and I was really happy with how patient we were offensively. I was very pleased with how well the kids played in the first half."

USF finished with 10 turnovers (six below its season average), outrebounded an opponent for the first time (38-34) and shot a season-high 70 percent (21-of-30) on free throws.

NO. 1 UCONN 92, HOLY CROSS 32: Swin Cash scored 16 points and the host Huskies forced 35 turnovers. The Crusaders shot 22 percent and were scoreless for up to seven minutes during one stretch. By halftime, Holy Cross had used all but one timeout.

NO. 7 IOWA STATE 91, TEX.-PAN AMERICAN 59: Angie Welle dominated inside against shorter defenders with 20 points and 11 rebounds and the host Cyclones overcame a slow start. Welle made her first six shots, beat the Broncos down the floor for layups and finished 8-of-10 while playing 22 minutes.

NO. 12 LA. TECH 83, NO. 14 MISSISSIPPI STATE 65: Ayana Walker had 12 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks as the Techsters won their 30th straight at home. Tech outrebounded the Bulldogs 46-24.

Stiles, who scored 27 in the second half, tied it at 77 with 7:56 left and sparked a 17-4 run that gave Southwest Missouri State a 92-81 lead. Stiles is 564 points shy of the Division I scoring record of 3,122 set by Mississippi Valley's Patricia Hoskins in 1989.

UCONN: Freshman guard-forward Ashley Battle will be sidelined two months with a torn ligament in her left elbow.
