Letters of thanks

Editor: To all of the wonderful people who have helped us, thank you so much for your kindness. Your cards and prayers and words of encouragement have been so helpful in this time of great distress. It's amazing how so many people opened their hearts and their pocket books to help people they did not even know.

When we lost our home to fire on Wagon Wheel Lane in Beacon Woods on Oct. 22, we felt lost ourselves. Pete had been badly burned and spent two weeks in the hospital. Watching our pennies, we took the chance and did not have insurance on the house as we were not yet living there. Because Pete was doing the renovation himself, we planned that he would start work after we moved into the house in December for Christmas, so there were no employer benefits and no health insurance. Many of our personal belongings were reduced to ash along with the rubble of our home.

With everything so dismal, the help that came from so many was so important to us. Again, thank you and God bless you.

Editor: A recent article in the Times speaks of Hospice care. Do learn about these caring people. I became acquainted with them in September when my wife had a sudden massive cerebral hemorrhage. She went into a coma from which she did not recover.

At about 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, I called 911 after my wife collapsed. They responded immediately and took her to New Port Richey Community Hospital. She was in emergency where an x-ray was taken around 9 p.m. When the result came back around 9:30 p.m., I was told the cerebral hemorrhage was massive, and she probably would pass away that night or in 24-48 hours. She was moved to a room in intensive care, and for the next days we tried to obtain information from the physicians. The nurses told us what they could and finally were able to get a specialist to give us some information. This was a very trying time for our family.

On Thursday, personnel from the hospital, etc. advised us that my wife had to be moved from the hospital (We have an HMO plan plus Medicare). We had three choices: take her home and have hospice visits, admit her to a nursing home, take her to hospice. Remember, from the first night in emergency we were told that she had 24-48 hours to live and she was in a coma. We chose Hospice of Pasco. In consultation with us, various personnel took care of the details, and on Saturday morning my wife was moved to Hospice House in New Port Richey. The nightmare ended in a God-send!

My wife was given a cheerful room where competent nurses and volunteers (I won't mention names for fear of forgetting someone) cared for her attending to her needs while also displaying great care for our family. Our daughter stayed in the room all night, every night, and we could come and go as necessary. The last two days as we and the staff felt that the end was coming, they explained what to watch for and what could take place. My four grown children and I had a beautiful experience staying with their mother to the very end as she died.

Look into Hospice of Pasco or another hospice with which you may be acquainted. The Hospice House for the Hospice of Pasco has offices on the corner of Moog Road and U.S. 19 in Universal Plaza. The also have a Thrift Store. Thanks again, Hospice of Pasco County.

Editor: I would appreciate your printing of this short note as a way of thanking U.S. Rep. Mike Bilirakis and staff for the way they assisted in a problem that had been very stressful for a long period of time.

I had been trying to straighten out a problem with the IRS on some matters that we know that it was their mistake and were really upset. I tried everything and got no satisfaction until I wrote Congressman Bilirakis and forwarded all of the information to his office.

Within three days I had a reply from his office that the matter would be looked into. Not even one week later I received notification that my problem was taken care of with an apology and paperwork to verify it!

I am a Democrat but Congressman Bilirakis got our votes.

Thank you, Michael Bilirakis, and happy holidays. I know mine will be!
