White leads Chiefs on 3-pointer rampageBy ROD GIPSON© St. Petersburg Times, published December 9, 2001 TAMPA -- There have been plenty of positives out of Chamberlain's boys basketball team's 3-2 start. But none brighter than the play of guard Otis White. Already the Chiefs leading scorer at 16 points a game, White stepped up his game during the past week as Chamberlain fought off rivals Sickles and Gaither to improve over .500. White nailed six three-pointers and went 10-for-10 as the Chiefs defeated Gaither 66-56 last Monday. Two days later, he hit on four three-pointers in the fourth period as Chamberlain rallied for a 56-53 win against Sickles. White finished that game with 21 points. In other action, Antonio Russell scored 12 points to lead the Cowboys to a 78-25 victory against Alonso. Gaither (3-1) jumped out to a 22-9 lead in the opening period and cruised from that point. Also, despite 10 points from Jeff James, Wharton fell 52-38 to Brandon. The loss was the first of the season for the 4-1 Wildcats. GIRLS BASKETBALL: If a 21-0 first period and a 37-1 halftime score weren't bad enough, Gaither went on to a 70-4 thrashing of first year Alonso on Wednesday. The Cowboys had 12 players score, led by Tasha Ross' 14 points. Gaither improved to 5-1 while the Ravens (0-6) continue to look for their first win. In other action, Courtney Wilder scored 28 points to lead Chamberlain to its first win of the year, a 49-41 decision against Sickles. Leto got 27 points from J.J. Womble to beat Plant City 67-35; and despite 21 points from Candice Dupree, Wharton lost 60-52 to Brandon. BOYS SOCCER: It was quite a week for Alonso, especially Ivan Sarti. A free kick in the 65th minute by Sarti handed the Ravens a 1-0 win against Jefferson on Tuesday. A few days earlier, Sarti notched the first score of the game as Alonso beat Plant 4-1. The Ravens are now 3-4 on the season. Gaither, Leto and Sickles are off to great starts. A Jared Rose goal got the scores rolling in a 9-0 Gaither win against Hillsborough. Sickles, meanwhile, got two second-half scores from Nick Vermette in a 4-2 win against Leto. Gaither stands at 4-1, Sickles is 4-2 and Leto is 4-2-2. GIRLS SOCCER: Wendy Moenert scored two goals as Sickles remained unbeaten with a 4-2 win against Leto. The Gryphons are 6-0-1 while Leto is struggling at 1-4. In other play, Gaither improved to 4-0-1 with a 3-0 win against Hillsborough, Chamberlain was pounded 6-0 by King, and Alonso fell to 0-6 after losing 5-0 to Plant. BOYS WRESTLING: Even though the season is early, Gaither and Leto turned in good performances in the East Lake Invitational Wrestling Tournament in Tarpon Springs. The Cowboys finished sixth with 104 points, placing four wrestlers in the top four. Scoring a pin at one minute, 28 seconds in the championship bout, Leto senior heavyweight Gilbert Perez won the individual championship. Perez defeated Gaither's Seth Reber. Falcon team results were not as exciting; they finished 13th with a score of 47. Heavyweight Seth Reber finished second in the contest. Joel Tangelo (125), Joel Medgebow and Sean Reber (215) all finished third to score most of Gaither's team points. - Includes reporting by correspondent Terry Jones. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
