Pasco begins vote countBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published December 10, 2000 NEW PORT RICHEY -- The Pasco County Supervisor of Elections office on Saturday separated ballots that did not register a vote for president. The Canvassing Board was scheduled to begin examining those ballots by hand for unrecorded votes at 1:45 p.m. in the Dade City elections office. The board adopted the same policy as Hillsborough County for determining votes, Supervisor of Elections Kurt Browning said. Ballots with two or more separated chad corners would be counted. Those with one corner separated would be counted if voter intent could be determined. No "dimpled" ballots were to be counted. Observers from both parties -- some carrying magnifying glasses and calculators -- watched intently Saturday morning as officials separated "undervote" ballots in Dade City and New Port Richey. Republican representative John Renke filed several complaints and got into a heated exchange with board member Robert Cole, a county judge. One of the Republican grievances centered around the chads that flew from several ballots, scattering around the computers and the floor. "It's amazing what four people on a Supreme Court can do to a Saturday," said Canvassing Board Member Ann Hildebrand, a county commissioner. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
