Game review
By ROBB GUIDO FrequencySYSTEM: PlayStation 2 MAKER: Sony PRICE: $49.99 The music starts off simple in Frequency. Getting one button combination right results in the beat track. Getting two combinations in a row layers a guitar riff on top of the beat. Getting more right leads to vocals and, finally, a fully orchestrated song that will have players tapping their feet and bobbing their heads as they try to keep the groove going. There have been music games before, but those games mostly have players keep time with an established soundtrack. In Frequency, players create the soundtrack by playing well. The game is set inside a tunnel, with psychedelic background effects. As the song progresses, players spin the tunnel, choosing a song layer to work on, and they get that layer going by mashing buttons to the beat. The songs get quicker with more elaborate beat patterns to boost the game's difficulty. In all, there are 25 songs from popular artists such as No Doubt and Orbit. And there's a multiplayer mode so friends can chime in. Players who pick this one up should expect to be hooked early and play it often. - Robb Guido is an avid gamer who lives in Tampa.
