Solutions: Changing the owner's name in Windows 98
By JOHN TORRO Q. When we installed Windows 98 on our office computer, the secretary typed in her name and our company name as the owner. Now she is gone and we would like to remove her name from popping up on this computer all the time. Is there any way to do this?
A. There are two ways, each involving modifying the registry. Of course, there are risks involved when modifying the registry. However, Windows 98 makes a backup copy each time you boot. If something goes wrong, you would need to boot to DOS, run SCANREG and select a previous copy. With that said, let's move on. If you're comfortable modifying the registry, click Start, Run, type RegEdit, then press Enter. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ If you would rather not modify the registry directly, try this method: 1. Using Notepad, create a new file.
2. Type in the following four lines (note the second line is a blank line which needs to be there) REGEDIT4[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ 3. Substitute your name in the fourth line in place of Your Correct Name. Save the file with any name and the extension .REG (such as NAME.REG) and exit Notepad. 4. Double-click on this newly created file and it will automatically update your registry. There will be some confirmation messages asking if you really want to do this, then a message of success when it's done. 5. Reboot. Organizing your FavoritesQ. I have a lot of Favorites and would like to know if there is a way to sort them alphabetically. A. This requires Internet Explorer version 5 or higher. Open your Favorites menu, right-click and select Sort By Name. AOL improperly removedQ. The day Road Runner was installed on my computer, a small window titled Microsoft Connection Manager popped up. The message was "The service profile is damaged. Reinstall the service profile." No one knows what this is and it cannot be found anywhere in my computer. I have reinstalled Windows 98 hoping to correct the problem. It hasn't harmed anything, but I'm afraid it may. How can I reinstall it if I can't find it? A: This can happen when you don't use the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to uninstall America Online. If this is what happened to you, and it was your intention to remove AOL, uninstall it through Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs (you may need to reinstall it first). If you still run AOL, remove the AOL icon from your Startup folder: 1. Click the Start button, then choose Programs\Startup. 2. Right-click the AOL Tray and choose Delete. Never try to uninstall software by deleting the files through Explorer. Always check Add/Remove Programs first. If it's not listed there, look for and run the Uninstall.EXE file in the directory where the application was installed.
