Speedway, drivers cross finish line with banquetBy LOGAN NEILL© St. Petersburg Times, published December 11, 2001 For Herb Neumann Jr., it was the easiest money he has earned all year. The newly crowned Citrus County Speedway Late Model champion, who drove 25 races, had to stroll only a few feet to collect a $2,500 check Saturday night during the annual Women's Racing Club Awards Banquet. "If only every week was like that," said Neumann, who was among 60 drivers in seven divisions honored with a portion of this year's $20,000 in points fund prize money. Neumann, who has competed 16 seasons at the track, snared his first Late Model championship with five wins and 12 top-five finishes. Other first-time champions included Frank Coleman (Mini Stock), Travis Nichols (Street Stock), Richie Smith (Hobby Stock) and Stuart Madison (Thunder Stock). More than 350 people attended the banquet, which included awards in rookie of the year, fans favorite, sportsmanship and most improved driver categories. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
