DADE CITY -- The role retired County Commissioner Sylvia Young played in the restoration of the historic courthouse downtown is carved in stone.

Really.

County commissioners unveiled a stone marker on the lawn of the courthouse recognizing the work Young did to lead the $2.3-million restoration and in obtaining the antique furnishings inside.

Commission Chairwoman Ann Hildebrand, as the tarp covering the marker was removed, called Young "the mother of the courthouse."

The marker reads, "Commissioner Sylvia Young, who served from Nov. 18, 1980 to Nov. 21, 2000: With great appreciation for your dreams, efforts and dedication to the major role you played to keep history alive with the preservation of this historic courthouse."

When she was called upon for a speech, Young kept her remarks short.

"Thank you very much," she said.

The restoration was completed in early 1999, and the work won recognition this year from the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation, Florida's largest nonprofit private historic preservation agency.
