Man arrested after truck set on fire

ZEPHYRHILLS -- A 33-year-old Zephyrhills man was arrested Monday after a witness said he set a 1994 Ford pickup truck on fire.

Witnesses said Kenneth Ray Houston, of 38702 10th St., took the truck from a party he was at about 2 a.m. Sunday.

The truck did not belong to him, reports stated.

A witness, who was not identified, told police officers that Houston drove her to a house off Chancey Road.

But he then took her to Parkhill Terrace Apartments, where he began spreading papers around the cab of the truck, the witness said.

She said Houston then set a piece of paper on fire. Officers arrived to find the truck engulfed in flames.

Houston faces a charge of arson in the incident. He was taken to the Land O'Lakes jail, where he remained Tuesday in lieu of $15,000 bail.

Reports state that Dean Ross Rubner of 18306 Parrish Grove Road began throwing things in the kitchen after an argument with his wife, Elaine.

He also pulled the phone out of the wall. Elaine Rubner told deputies that her husband then grabbed her wrist and began pulling her toward the garage.

He grabbed a steak knife from the counter and began to hit her in the chest and abdomen repeatedly with the knife handle, the report said.

Reports state he then threw a phone book at her and told her to call the "abuse people." He later passed out because he had been drinking, his wife said.

Rubner faces charges of aggravated battery. He was taken to the Land O'Lakes jail, where he remained Tuesday in lieu of $2,500 bail.

Officers said Hansen was confronted by two county employees, when he pulled a knife from his back pocket and waved it menacingly at them, threatening to cut them, the report said.

The county employees had subdued Hansen by the time police arrived. He faces charges of aggravated assault and trespassing.

Hansen was taken to the Land O'Lakes jail, where he remained Tuesday in lieu of $5,250 bail.

Deputies charge man with exploiting disabled person

NEW PORT RICHEY -- A man was arrested Monday after a Pasco sheriff's investigation found he exploited a 20-year-old man with autism and Tourette syndrome, deputies said.

Michael J. Shackelford, 31, of 12447 Glen Oak Ave. faces charges of exploitation of a disabled person and grand theft, deputies said.

Deputies said Shackelford helped the man open a checking account and transferred two utility bills to the man's name.

The overdue Verizon phone bill is $850, and the overdue Time Warner cable bill is $600, deputies said.

The Crown Bank checking account was frozen after 31 checks bounced, deputies said. The checks total $1,725.

Deputies also said that Shackelford persuaded the man to submit his car title to a bail bondsman after Shackelford was arrested on an unrelated charge.

Tourette syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by tics, and autism is a developmental disorder that affects brain development.

Shackelford, who also was wanted for failing to appear on two charges in Pinellas County, was being held Tuesday night at county jail in Land O'Lakes in lieu of $8,026 bail.
