Florida QB Rex Grossman answers questions during a party for the ESPN College Football Awards. Grossman won the AP Player of the Year award for 2001, was named first-team quarterback for the All-America team and finished second in votes for the Heisman award.
Rex Grossman, who led the nation in passing with 3,896 yards and 34 touchdowns, was one of four Florida players on the Associated Press All-America first team.

The four represent the most of any school.

Receiver Jabar Gaffney, offensive tackle Mike Pearson and defensive end Alex Brown are the other Gators.

Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch was selected as the first-team all-purpose player.

Miami's Ken Dorsey was the second-team quarterback.

The first team includes two Hurricanes, offensive lineman Bryant McKinnie and free safety Edward Reed.

Yellow Jackets have interest in UCF coach

While Central Florida coach Mike Kruczek said he is intrigued about becoming the coach there, Georgia Tech officials quietly expressed their mutual feelings, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

There has been no contact between the coach and school, and the Yellow Jackets have not asked for permission to talk to Kruczek. But Georgia Tech funneled information through a third party that it has Kruczek on its list of candidates.

"It's something you have to look into," Kruczek said. "It's a very visible program. It's something I'd be interested in talking to those people about."

UCF: Offensive tackle Steve Edwards, defensive end Elton Patterson, tailback Alex Haynes, defensive tackle Josh McKibben, linebacker Tito Rodriguez and cornerback Asante Samuel were named to the Football News All-Independent Team. McKibben, Rodriguez, receiver Tavirus Davis and safety Ricot Joseph were named to the Collegefootballnews.com All-Independent team.

MARYLAND: Ralph Friedgen agreed to a 10-year deal. He signed a six-year deal when he arrived last year.

MIAMI (OHIO): Coach Terry Hoeppner received a two-year contract extension. The school didn't disclose terms of the contract, which runs through 2005.

OHIO ST.: Quarterback Steve Bellisari was reinstated as a captain after his arrest last month on a charge of drunken driving. Coach Jim Tressel has not said if he will play in the Outback Bowl.

PURDUE: Brandon Hance, who lost the starting quartering job to Kyle Orton, will transfer. Hance, a redshirt freshman, started the first nine games but was replaced by the freshman for the final two. Roger Hance said his son will try to transfer to a West Coast school.

SOUTH CAROLINA ST.: Oliver Pough was hired as coach, replacing the retiring Willie Jeffries. Pough, running backs coach at South Carolina this season, takes over a team that went 6-5 this season but had losing records the previous three.

TEMPLE: Coach Bobby Wallace denied a newspaper report identifying him as one of two finalists for the job at Louisiana-Lafayette. Wallace confirmed, though, he met with UL-Lafayette officials.

VIRGINIA: Quarterback Bryson Spinner, who shared the starting job with another sophomore this season, and running back Arlen Harris will transfer. The university said both are expected to go to Division I-AA schools. Harris was bothered by injuries and did not carry the ball in the final five games. But he still was the team's second-leading rusher with 368 yards.

WESTERN CAROLINA: Fullback Toren Gerard Gordon was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder in the shooting death of a man outside a nightclub last week. He is being held on $500,000 bail.

ATTENDANCE: The SEC led the nation in total attendance for the 21st consecutive season, averaging 72,130 fans a game. The Big Ten finished second, averaging 70,306, while the Big 12 was third at 55,692. Michigan averaged the most (109,908). Penn State was second (107,576).
