Sports: Seminole executes plan to perfection

Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen could have all the attempts she wanted, provided she fought to get them and they were far, far from the basket. If the junior could make them, fine. If not, the Warhawks liked their chances.

Tuesday night, Seminole found an awful lot to like, as its game plan on the all-county first-teamer worked and another all-county star took center stage in an 82-52 romp.

Roegiers-Jensen hit just 4 of 17 shots in the first half, most from the perimeter. Warhawks junior Jen Hansen, however, got hot inside and out of the paint, hitting seven field goals and 8 of 9 free throws in a 23-point half that helped lift Seminole to a Class 5A, District 10 win.

"Everything was going great, we came out hard," Hansen said. "This is a very big win."

Seminole jumped out front quickly, forcing previously-unbeaten Boca Ciega to play catch-up on the road.

With the game tied 9-9 with 3 minutes, 27 seconds left in the first quarter, Hansen hit a 3-pointer to spur a 9-0 run. In the second quarter, Hansen scored on two consecutive trips down court to cap a 14-0 run that put Seminole up 39-15.

"We tried to play a zone on them and slow them down, but they caught on fire, hit some outside shots and got a little lead on us," Boca Ciega coach Nate Southern said. "We played catch-up from there on out."

Roegiers-Jensen hit two 3-pointers to open the second half, but Seminole had answers. On three of their first four possessions, the Warhawks hit fastbreak layups, and with an edge in rebounding throughout the quarter, stretched their lead to 61-32 by the end of the quarter.

Seminole (7-1, 4-0) got a season-high 37 from Hansen and 20 from Alli Fogle. Boca Ciega (8-1, 3-1) got points from just four players, led by Roegiers-Jensen's 29 on 8-of-29 shooting. Dominique Forte added 12.

"I thought our game plan worked exceptionally well," Seminole coach Dave Swanson said. "It was a tremendous confidence-builder-type game."
