A Savage encounter
By DAVE SCHEIBER Dozens of patients at St. Petersburg's All Children's Hospital received a surprise visit Tuesday from pro wrestling star "Macho Man" Randy Savage. The Treasure Island resident was at the hospital to issue a formal challenge to fellow wrestling icon Hulk Hogan, who lives in Belleair. Savage wants to wrestle Hogan at the Bayfront Center in early 2002, with all proceeds going to All Children's. At his press conference, Savage reiterated a dare made Monday on the Internet for Hogan to accept by midnight, Dec. 24. Hogan has yet to respond, he says. "It's very simple -- I live in this town, and Hulk Hogan lives in this town, too," said Savage, clad in all black, with silver-rimmed shades with amber lenses. "It's a wonderful thing -- two high-profile people supporting a great cause. It's a natural." Savage said that while the match would take place locally, it would be "a worldwide event" in scope. "If we can just get a yes out of Hulk Hogan -- and let me emphasize it's not about winning or losing -- the kids win, All Children's hospital wins," he said. Afterward, he spent two hours visiting sick patients. He was a big hit with kids and staff. "You're tough, you know that?" the burly wrestler told Joshua Pinto, 4, of Tampa, who had undergone a splenectomy. "Stay positive, and I'll be back here to see you." Joshua then got a gentle high-five from Savage, and smiled broadly.
