FSU recruit Bracy needs to retest

If Florida State freshman J.D. Bracy is to be declared eligible this season, it appears he will have to take his standardized test again, school compliance director Bob Minnix said Tuesday.

Bracy, the former Kissimmee Osceola star guard, was admitted as a partial qualifier, but appealed to the NCAA for immediate reinstatement based on a learning disability.

"The tone of the letter (from the NCAA, dated Dec. 4) is not all that enthusiastic about making him eligible without taking his test again," Minnix said, adding Bracy would be allowed to do so without the restraint of the normal time limit.

The problem with that option is that Bracy, even if he attains the necessary score, would have missed so many games that it might be best for him to sit out anyway. That, however, wouldn't help a struggling team in need of more offensive punch.

Minnix added he's going to send the NCAA additional information to strengthen Bracy's case for immediate eligibility like Michigan State freshman Zach Randolph and Florida guard Orien Greene.

"That's still possible," he said. "Unfortunately, you don't know what was presented for Orien Greene and Zach Randolph."

UCF 68, MIDDLE TENNESSEE 64: Brandon High graduate Joey Graham scored 25 points to lead visiting Central Florida.

With a little more than two minutes left, Jason Thornton hit a free throw to tie the score at 61, then another to put Central Florida ahead for good.

Middle Tennessee had a chance to tie in the final seconds, but Freddie Martinez missed a jumper.

Thornton and Paul Reed both finished with 12 points for Central Florida.
