DURANT -- A little more than a week after Durant and Bloomingdale last tangled, the teams squared off again Tuesday with nearly identical results.

The Bloomingdale boys, who topped Durant 4-1 at Bloomingdale on Dec. 1, clobbered the Cougars 5-1. And the Bloomingdale girls, who tied Durant 1-1 also on Dec. 1, battled the Cougars to another 1-1 tie. The unbeaten Bloomingdale girls (4-0-3) took the lead in the first half on a penalty kick by Tara Escribano. But with less than two minutes remaining, Melissa Diamond tied it for Durant (5-1-2) on a feed from Kristen Danielik.

"I think (Bloomingdale) actually outplayed us tonight," Durant coach Dick Scheffield said. "In our first game, I thought we outplayed them. So I guess we're even."

Durant's only loss this season was 1-0 to defending state champion Palm Harbor University. In the tough Class 4A, District 7, every game is crucial.

"There are no breathers in our district this year," Scheffield said.

In the boys game, Durant (2-4-3) put up a good fight in the first half, battling the Bulls to a 1-1 tie.

Without the services of striker Brandon Hancock (flu) and sweeper Mike Heldreth (knee), Bloomingdale had to shuffle some players but found its stride in the second half.

Ryan Smith and Ryan Kelly scored a pair of goals to help the Bulls pull away.

"We were a little disorganized on defense in the first half, trying to adjust to the changes," Bulls coach Dave Tennian said.

"But Cory (Stump) did a great job at sweeper like we knew he would, and we put it together in the second half."

Bloomingdale (6-1), which suffered its only loss 2-0 on Friday against Gaither, still has a good shot at a top seed in 4A-7. The top two seeds earn byes, which are critical in a district that is competitive from top to bottom.
