Can the movie match the gossip?

Can the movie match the gossip?

Tom Cruise and writer-director Cameron Crowe team again in Vanilla Sky, their first collaboration since Jerry Maguire in 1996. Vanilla Sky is based on the 1998 Spanish film Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes) directed by Alejandro Amenabar, who was originally asked to produce the remake with Cruise. Amenabar dropped out to direct The Others, starring the former Mrs. Cruise, Nicole Kidman. The "former" status reportedly is due to Cruise's infatuation with his Vanilla Sky co-star Penelope Cruz, who starred in Amenabar's original film. Got that? Good. Now we'll see if the movie is worth all of the gossip it created. Cruise plays womanizing David Aames, whose involvement with Sofia Serrano (Cruz) upsets his lover (Cameron Diaz), whose attraction is nearly fatal, leaving David with physical scars and a lot of unanswered questions about love and sex. Sounds like Open Your Eyes Wide Shut. Crowe's film was previewed too late for Weekend coverage. See Friday's Floridian section for a full review.
