Barons crush depleted Marauders

CLEARWATER -- With a pair of 6-footers out sick, the outcome was all but set for Clearwater Central Catholic against rival St. Petersburg Catholic.

Why? Because the Barons' 6-foot-3 center, Catherine DuPont, was perfectly healthy.

The star senior enjoyed an efficient, brief night in the paint, scoring 28 points in just less than three quarters as SPC easily downed CCC 81-45.

The Marauders started strong on their home floor, keeping the game close midway through the second quarter. But with 2:33 left, Virginia Foster hit the first of her four three-pointers for the Barons, giving them a 10-point lead at 27-17. DuPont then exploded in the final 1:22, scoring seven points to help take SPC into the locker room up 36-20.

Early in the second half, she continued where she left off, scoring six unanswered points to push the lead to more than 20. CCC got no closer.

"There's not much you can do when your center is 5-10 and she's playing a girl that's (6-3)," CCC coach Phil McGee said. "We just couldn't stop her on the inside coming out in the second half."

CCC (4-7 overall, 2-4 in Class 3A, District 11) played without three of its centers. Nikki Darbois and Mindy Szarowicz sat out with the flu, and another was declared academically ineligible. Barons coach Nick Vandewalle was not sure if their presence would have made a difference.

"I think (DuPont) would have pretty much done the same thing," Vandewalle said. "She's done the same thing to everyone else."

Foster added 16 points and Lauren DuPont 13 for SPC, which remained perfect in the district (9-1, 6-0).

The Barons own a victory over every team in the district except Tampa Catholic, who they play for the first time Jan. 5.

Lisa Portmann led the Marauders with 13 points while Ashley Armstrong had 10.
