Alabama hires new assistant

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama hired former North Carolina coach Carl Torbush as defensive coordinator Thursday.

Torbush joins the staff of new Crimson Tide coach Dennis Franchione. He was fired by the Tar Heels on Nov. 20 after the team went 6-5 in his third season.

"Carl Torbush is one of the premier defensive coordinators in the nation, and is a coach who is familiar with the SEC," Franchione said. "It is a plus that Coach Torbush has been an assistant and head coach.

"He can see both sides and the big picture."

Torbush built one of the nation's top defenses at North Carolina from 1988-97 before replacing Mack Brown as coach. He went 17-18 in three seasons.

GEORGIA TECH: Coach George O'Leary signed a six-year contract for about $1.1-million a year. O'Leary's annual package includes a $270,000 base salary, $366,000 from radio and television shows, $150,000 from apparel agreements and $250,000 for speaking engagements to alumni groups.

MICHIGAN: Captain James Whitley has been dismissed from the team after his arrest on a concealed weapon charge. Whitley was arraigned and freed on a $10,000 personal bond until a preliminary hearing Dec. 27. The 21-year-old cornerback was arrested Thursday morning on the charge, Ann Arbor police said.

MISSISSIPPI STATE: Linebacker Barris Grant, who was redshirted this season because of a knee injury, has a spinal cord disorder that will end his career, a Jackson television station reported.

TCU: Gary Patterson will take over a little sooner than planned. Patterson, the defensive coordinator-turned-incoming coach, will guide the Horned Frogs in the Mobile Bowl instead of predecessor Franchione.
