South Sumter to leave GCAC

South Sumter's 14-year association with the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference will end after the school year because many of the league's schools have grown too large and scheduling has become a problem.

South Sumter is Class 2A in football and Class 3A in many other sports. It is the smallest school in the conference, which includes Central, Citrus, Crystal River, Hernando, Lecanto and Springstead -- schools that are 3A in football and 4A in several other sports.

"The scheduling problem is factored in because our district (for football) is always a totally different group of schools," said Inman Sherman, South Sumter's athletic director and football coach. "In football, we would have to play a conference game as a preseason classic to be able to play everybody. We just felt like it was probably in everybody's best interest if we stepped out."

He said South Sumter's 2001 football schedule likely will include one team -- Crystal River -- from Citrus and Hernando counties.
