Skid extends for Chaney, Temple
PHILADELPHIA -- Mike Kelley scored seven of his nine points in a late 9-0 run and No. 16 Wisconsin beat Temple 66-58 Thursday night for the Owls' sixth loss in a row, the longest losing streak in coach John Chaney's 19 seasons.
The Badgers won their sixth in a row and snapped Temple's 24-game winning streak at the Liacouras Center. Temple's last loss in its on-campus building came on Dec. 9, 1998, 63-56 to Wisconsin.
Alex Wesby scored on a drive with 5:01 left to bring Temple into a 53-53 tie. Kelley, the senior point guard who averages 7.0 points and 5.2 assists, then made two free throws with 4:27 left to give the Badgers the lead for good.
Mark Vershaw added two more free throws for Wisconsin before Kelley followed a turnover by Temple with his only three-pointer of the game and the Badgers' 14th, one shy of the school record.
The Badgers finished 14-for-28 from three-point range, getting a number of open looks by moving the ball well against Temple's matchup zone. Ricky Bower was 6-for-11 from beyond the arc and Ray Boone was 5-for-8.
The shooting raised the question of whether it is time for Chaney to abandon the matchup zone that has become his trademark.
"I've played man, zone, triangle-and-two. I've done it all," said Chaney, whose longest previous losing streak at Temple was five in 1982-83, his first season with the Owls. "It has nothing to do with it. They run good stuff and they put shooters on the floor."
The last time Temple lost this many games in a row was the 1975-76 season, when it lost 11. The five-game losing streak, which included two losses to No. 1 Duke, had matched the longest in Chaney's tenure.
The Badgers are 4-0 for interim coach Brad Sodeberg. He replaced Dick Bennett, who retired after the third game of the season.
VILLANOVA 79, LA SALLE 72: Jermaine Medley had eight points in the final 90 seconds as the Wildcats overcame a 10-point second-half deficit to win their fifth in a row, their longest winning streak since 1998-99.
UMASS 68, BOSTON 52: Kitwana Rhymer scored 10 points and Ronell Blizzard grabbed 14 rebounds as the visiting Minutemen ended a six-game losing streak.
RUTGERS 46, PRINCETON 44: Jeff Greer scored all 11 of his points in the second half and Mike Sherrod had 14 points as Rutgers overcame Princeton. It marked the fourth consecutive year and fifth time in six meetings the visiting team has won in the series.
