Four hurt as school bus is hit by car
By CARRIE JOHNSON, Times Staff Writer HOMOSASSA -- Three children suffered minor injuries and a woman was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital Friday, following a morning rush-hour collision between a school bus and a car. The bus was on Mason Creek Road en route to Crystal River Middle School with six students on board when it was struck by the 1984 Porsche about 8 a.m. The driver of the Porsche, Bonnie S. Konrady, 59, of Homosassa, was transported to Tampa General Hospital with a head injury. Her condition was unavailable Friday. The three children were taken to Seven Rivers Community Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries. According to the Citrus County Sheriff's Office, the school bus was traveling south at about 20 mph when it came to a curve. The Porsche, which was traveling the opposite direction, was going 45 mph, 10 miles above the posted speed limit, according to a Sheriff's Office accident report. The Porsche slid into the path of the bus, then overcorrected and skidded onto the right shoulder, then overcorrected again and struck the bus on its left side near the rear axle. After the collision, the Porsche slid back onto the road and hit a chain-link fence. Konrady was cited for careless driving for exceeding the speed limit, according to the report. Linda Fultz, the school district's transportation supervisor, said the bus driver radioed the school and the children's parents were notified of the wreck. The three who were not taken to the hospital were met by their parents at Homosassa Elementary School, a stop on the route to Crystal River Middle. The driver, Paula Zelaya, 53, was not injured. She has been with the school district since 1973, Fultz said. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
