SPRING HILL -- Hernando County will get its first foreign car dealership Jan. 2 when Gulfview Motors opens a new Mitsubishi franchise.

The new dealership will operate at the same place Gulfview Motors sells its used cars in Spring Hill, 3477 Commercial Way.

Gulfview Motors, a Pasco-based company that mostly sells used cars, moved into the new car business a year ago when it opened a Mitsubishi dealership in Pasco County. That was such a success that Gulfview Motors president Leon Kreisler decided to open a sister Mitsubishi dealership in Spring Hill.

"There are an awful lot of people who live in Hernando County who drive imports and yet there is no import dealership in Hernando County," Kreisler said Mitsubishi's research shows. "We have exceeded any expectations that we ever had with the Mitsubishi dealership (in Pasco)."

Kreisler expects to sell 50 new cars each month in addition to the 100 used cars Gulfview Motors has been selling in Hernando County. He also plans to hire 10 more people.

Gulfview Motors has been in business at its Port Richey location on U.S. 19 N for 16 years. It sells more used vehicles than any other new- or used-car dealer in Pasco, Hernando or Citrus counties and is one of the largest used car dealerships in the state, according to Modern Technologies, a Connecticut-based company that tracks data on Florida automotive sales.

"For some reason there are a lot of people who won't buy anything but preowned cars," Kreisler said.
