Sabres stifle Panthers' rally

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Erik Rasmussen had a goal and an assist and J.P. Dumont's goal extended his points streak to five games as the Sabres beat the Florida Panthers 3-2 Saturday night.

Denis Hamel had the other goal for the Sabres. Dmitri Kalinin had two assists.

Igor Larionov scored with 2:10 left to cut the deficit to one goal, but the Sabres held on. Mike Sillinger had Florida's first goal.

Dumont -- who leads Buffalo with 14 goals -- has six goals and three assists over the past five games. The line of Dumont, Stu Barnes and Miroslav Satan combined for 19 points in that stretch.

A night after giving up three goals on 21 shots in a 5-3 loss to Carolina, Buffalo goalie Dominik Hasek stopped 28 shots.

Buffalo led 1-0 after the first period on Hamel's goal. His was the Sabres' only shot over the last 10 minutes of the period.

That trend continued in the second, when Buffalo didn't get off a shot for the first 131/2 minutes. Then Kalinin put a slap shot on net that Florida goalie Trevor Kidd blocked. Barnes kept the rebound alive and Dumont scooped it up, skated to his left and flipped a backhand shot from 5 feet that slipped through Kidd's outstretched arms.

The Panthers are 0-13-1-2 when behind after two periods.

CAPITALS 4, OILERS 0: Peter Bondra had a goal and an assist, and Olaf Kolzig recorded his third shutout as Washington extended its home unbeaten streak to nine.

The Capitals, 7-0-2 at MCI Center in that span, have won four straight overall and are two games over .500 for the first time this season.

Kolzig made 14 saves -- the second-fewest shots Washington has allowed this season -- and improved to 9-1 in his past 10.

The Oilers needed nearly 15 minutes to put a shot on net in the first period and almost 12 minutes to do the same at the start of the third. Kolzig needs one more victory to tie Don Beaupre for Washington's career record of 128.

BLUES 2, RED WINGS 2: St. Louis' team-record eight-game winning streak ended at home.

Jochen Hecht scored a power-play goal on the Blues' lone shot of the third to salvage a tie. The Central Division leaders, 12-1-2 at home, were outshot 9-1.

Pavol Demitra also scored for the Blues, who have not lost since Vancouver beat them 4-3 Nov. 21.

Maxim Kuznetsov got his first career goal, and Tomas Holmstrom also scored for the Red Wings, who remained five points behind the Blues in the Central.

BLACKHAWKS 3, PREDATORS 0: Jocelyn Thibault made 24 saves for his 17th career shutout as visiting Chicago snapped a five-game skid.

BRUINS 4, HURRICANES 1: Joe Thornton and Sergei Samsonov scored two goals and Byron Dafoe made 17 saves in his first start in nearly a month for host Boston.

Thornton, who missed six recent games because of a charley horse and had not scored in exactly a month, fired a low shot past goalie Arturs Irbe to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead early in the second. He struck again four minutes later, this time on a high wrist shot.

PENGUINS 4, CANADIENS 4: Jaromir Jagr's eighth career hat trick couldn't spoil Saku Koivu's return to the lineup as the Montreal captain scored twice to help his team get a point at home.

The Canadiens are winless in eight games (0-6-2) since Nov. 30.

Jagr, who had scored twice in his 14 previous games, scored twice late in the second to tie the score and added his 18th goal 2:39 into the third. Koivu, who missed 28 games after injuring his knee in the Canadiens' fourth game, scored his second of the game at 12:47 to tie the score at 4.

FLYERS 6, DEVILS 3: Simon Gagne scored twice and Daymond Langkow and Rick Tocchet had a goal and two assists for host Philadelphia. It was the first meeting in Philadelphia between the clubs since New Jersey rallied from a 3-1 deficit in last season's Eastern Conference final -- winning two of the final three games on the Flyers' ice. New Flyers coach Bill Barber improved to 2-0-2.

FLAMES 6, MAPLE LEAFS 5 (OT): Valeri Bure scored the winner as visiting Calgary spoiled Curtis Joseph's bid for his 300th win. Toronto's Gary Roberts received a roughing penalty as regulation expired, and Bure one-timed the puck past Joseph 34 seconds into extra time. After a 13-game goal-less streak, Bure has three in his past three games. Toronto overcame a 5-3 deficit in the third.

SENATORS 6, ISLANDERS 0: Patrick Lalime made 26 saves, earning his fourth shutout for host Ottawa. Ex-Lightning Rob Zamuner was among six who scored as Ottawa moved into sole possession of first in the Eastern Conference.

BRUINS: The club reached a buyout agreement with former defenseman Paul Coffey. ... Defenseman Peter Popovic (broken foot) returned to the lineup after missing 14 games.

FLYERS: Center Keith Primeau (back spasms) left in the second period and did not return.

PENGUINS: Goaltender Garth Snow has been suspended for two games for punching Panthers forward Peter Worrell. Based on his salary, Snow will lose $6,417.

SABRES: Forward Doug Gilmour (pelvic injury) was activated to face Florida. He ranks 13th on the NHL's career assists list.
