Seized car may be tied to roadway shooting
By DONG-PHUONG NGUYEN, Times Staff Writer TAMPA -- Hillsborough County sheriff's officials impounded a 1992 Saturn in connection with a weekend shooting that left a mother of three young boys dead. The car was taken from a Ruskin home about 10 p.m. Sunday, hours after Liznette Riviera, 27, died from a gunshot wound to her head while riding in her boyfriend's Mitsubishi, said sheriff's spokesman Lt. Rod Reder. No arrests have been made, and sheriff's officials gave no motive in the shooting. Riviera, mother of sons of ages 5, 3 and 2, was shot early Sunday as she rode in a car driven by Alfredo Delgado. According to Reder, the shooting happened just minutes after sheriff's deputies broke up a drag race off 78th Street, south of Progress Village Boulevard. Riviera and Delgado were among a crowd of spectators who drove off when deputies arrived. Delgado headed north on 78th Street toward the couple's apartment in Town "N Country. He steered his 1994 Mitsubishi around a slow-moving Saturn. Suddenly, a bullet shattered the rear window of Delgado's car. He looked over and saw Riviera slumped over in the passenger seat, Reder said. He stopped the car at the 7-Eleven store at Causeway and 78th Street for help. Riviera was flown to Tampa General Hospital, where she died hours later. Reder said that two men were in the light-colored Saturn, but officials do not think the shooting was road rage. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
