Dead man in yard was murder suspect
By CURTIS KRUEGER, Times Staff Writer ST. PETERSBURG -- A routine traffic stop led to a homicide investigation Monday when lights from the police cruiser revealed a body sprawled on a front yard in 4400 block of Sixth Avenue S. It was Cornelius Robert Davis, 35, a suspect in a double homicide in Miami. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been shot in the upper torso, police said, though further details were unavailable. He had been a suspect since Dec. 8 in the Miami-area slaying of his ex-girlfriend and her brother. Tangela Bogan, 36, was gunned down in Coconut Grove while walking with her brother, Henry Bogan, 40. The discovery of Davis' body in St. Petersburg was a shock to nearby residents. But for Tangela Bogan's eldest daughter, it brought a measure of relief -- family members had been worried Davis might attack them. "It'll be easier to sleep now," said Onika Bogan, 17, in a telephone interview from Miami. A Miami Herald story last week said that since the double homicide in which Davis was considered the prime suspect, "detectives have learned that Davis allegedly has five others on a Christmas wish list of death, people he wants to kill who are connected to him" or to his ex-girlfriend. "I never met him, but he scared me," said Miami-Dade homicide Detective Ervens Ford, who plans to travel to St. Petersburg today. Ford said Davis formerly lived in St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg police had been alerted to look out for him, said Sgt. Michael Puetz. "We believe he has acquaintances in this area," Puetz said. Tangela Bogan's mother Martha said she wished Davis had survived so officers could interview him. "I was praying to the good Lord that they could catch him let him know that he took my two children." © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
