Hernando digestBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published December 19, 2000 Sheriff's officials warn residents of man using door-to-door scamAuthorities continue to warn residents about a "grandmother scam." Hernando sheriff's officials say they still are receiving reports of a man who knocks on doors, pretends to know the home's occupants, then asks to borrow money, usually saying he is trying to help his stranded grandmother. Sheriff's officials said they got another complaint about the man over the weekend from a woman who lives on Faber Drive near Hill 'n Dale. The woman did not give the man any money and immediately called the Sheriff's Office, but he was gone by the time deputies arrived. Several other residents have fallen for the man's story. The man is described as white, in his 20s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and 150 pounds with medium-length brown hair. He drives a gray or tan Chevrolet car.
