Hurt neck puts Allen out a day

TALLAHASSEE -- Linebacker Brian Allen gave Florida State coaches and teammates a scare Wednesday when he suffered a neck injury during a brief scrimmage.

X-rays were negative, and trainer Randy Oravetz said Allen, tied with linebacker Bradley Jennings for the team lead in tackles (102), has a sprain. He likely will miss today's practice.

"I'm straight," Allen said.

Cornerback Tay Cody missed his third consecutive day of practice with an intestinal virus. He received IV fluids at Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic.

Safety Derrick Gibson (sick) and offensive tackle Char-ron Dorsey (left knee sprain) returned to practice as expected.

STAYING PUT: Jennings, a junior, said he's not thinking about entering the NFL draft. He wants to graduate, and with the departures of Tommy Polley and Allen, next season could be his time to shine.

"I think next year I'll really have a chance to showcase what I can do," Jennings said.

Junior safety Chris Hope said he will weigh his options and if told he would be a first-round pick, "I'm gone." -- BRIAN LANDMAN

Assistant headed to UNC

GAINESVILLE -- Florida defensive line coach Rod Broadway accepted the same position at his alma mater, North Carolina.

Broadway came to Florida in 1995 after coaching the defensive line at Duke. He will stay through the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2.

"We wish him the best up there," coach Steve Spurrier said.

Broadway would not comment.

Broadway, who will join new coach John Bunting's staff, played for the Tar Heels from 1974-77 and was All-ACC in 1977.

ZEDALIS GETS SIXTH SEASON: The NCAA granted center Zac Zedalis a sixth year of eligibility. Zedalis requested a sixth season after missing the past two because of a knee injury sustained during the season-opener against Western Michigan in 1999. He redshirted his freshman season.

FINAL PRACTICE: The Gators cut their final day of two-a-day practices short because of cold weather and practiced indoors during their morning session. Florida will hold a brief practice this morning before breaking for the holidays.

BULLARD UPDATE: Defensive end Thaddeus Bullard would not comment on his suspension from the Sugar Bowl. The senior will not make the trip to New Orleans because he violated university policy. -- DEBI JONES

'Canes bring the noise

CORAL GABLES -- Miami held an 1 1/2-hour practice with full contact at game speed. It included a little noise. "We decided to bring in the loud speakers and simulate some crowd noise since we'll be playing in a domed stadium," coach Butch Davis said. -- TIMES WIRES
