Sloppy UF still wins 9th in a row

CHICAGO -- Senior Tamara Stocks scored a season-high 19 points as No. 16 Florida beat Chicago State 79-30 on Wednesday, tying a school record with its ninth straight win to start a season.

The Gators opened with nine wins in 1995-96, 1983-84 and 1984-85. They go for the record Friday at Colorado.

Florida had its largest margin of victory this season despite committing a season-high 26 turnovers. Chicago State turned the ball over 34 times and shot 24 percent (12-of-50).

Florida outrebounded the Cougars 61-26.

"This was a win; that is about all I can say about this one," coach Carol Ross said. "I was disappointed with our team's lack of pride. We were extremely sloppy. We missed some very makable shots, and that's because of our lack of focus.

"We really should have dominated Chicago State a lot more than we did. We're just lucky they weren't able to make us pay for our mistakes."

Florida junior Naomi Mobley had 18 points and 16 rebounds for her third double double of the season and 17th of her career. Junior Brandi McCain added 12 points, and freshman Vanessa Hayden had seven points and 12 rebounds.

Carrie Klimson, Krisey Sanders, Loretta Ellul and Kafayat Davies led Chicago State with five points each.

Both teams turned the ball over on their first two possessions before the Gators scored 14 straight points en route to a 29-2 run. Chicago State scored its first points 6:10 into the game and didn't score again for another six minutes.

The Gators finished 24-of-36 from the free-throw line. Chicago State went to the line four times.

Florida also outrebounded the Cougars 61-26 and had 29 offensive rebounds.

TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI 79, JU 52: Detra Johnson had 16 points as the host Islanders pulled away early with a 14-0 run. Forward Angela Walker had a season-high 23 points for the Dolphins.
