Mystery tank removedINVERNESS -- The mystery metal tank discovered at the city's future Liberty Park last month was removed Thursday morning and taken to the landfill, Inverness parks director Pati Smith said. In less than an hour, American Environmental Associates pulled the underground tank out of the southwest corner of the grassy 4-acre property on North Apopka Avenue across from the Inverness Police Department. The 500-gallon tank may be about 50 years old, Smith said, but officials still have no clue what it may have stored. The tank was dry and had no fumes when workers pulled it out Thursday, and preliminary soil tests showed no contamination, she said. Additional soil samples will go to a laboratory for a second round of testing, but Smith is optimistic that the city can move forward with plans for the waterfront park. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
