Both Sickles teams shine in tourney

CITRUS PARK -- Sickles boys and girls high school soccer teams both made it to the finals Saturday in the Winter Invitational Soccer Tournament at Radice Park.

The Gryphon boys edged neighborhood rival Alonso 1-0 in the championship match and the girls suffered their first loss of the season 3-0 to Durant in the finals.

"All the matches were excellent throughout both days," tournament director Jerry Vermette said. "Sickles boys had to battle hard in both matches, especially against a surprisingly tough Alonso in the finals. The Ravens are in their first season, but Ray DiPompa has already started an excellent program."

Nick Vermette led the Sickles scorers with four goals in the two games. He was selected most valuable player for his consistent performance in guiding Sickles to the title.

Kristine Kelly led the Cougars to the girls championship and was also selected MVP. She scored three goals for Durant.

In the opening round on Friday, Sickles Megan Ogborn scored two goals in a 4-0 shutout of East Lake. Gryphons keeper Melinda Spall made five saves.

Vermette helped the Gryphons boys to defeat East Lake 5-2 in the opening round.

In round two, Durant's girls beat Alonso 10-0, but the boys game was decided on penalty kicks. Regulation time ended with a 1-1 tie, but in overtime, Alonso boys outscored Durant 2-1.

Alonso keeper Andrew Madero stopped four of five penalty kicks to secure the win.
