The K-Swiss tennis championship will start the new year with competition in men's and women's doubles on the clay courts at Glen Lakes Country Club on Jan.6-7.

The tournament is open to players of intermediate (3.0) to advanced (4.5+) ratings and will be played under the compass format, with at least 3 1/2 matches guaranteed provided there is a full field.

The tourney is limited to the first 16 teams in each event and will give out $550 worth of prizes.

The deadline to enter is Jan. 2 at 9 p.m. Entry fees must be received with registration forms to secure positions.

For more information or to enter, call Strings and Things Pro Shop, (352) 684-4321. Starting times will be available on Jan.4.

BOATING COURSE: The U.S. Coast Guard is offering a boating safety and seamanship course.

Classes are scheduled for 7-9 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday from Jan. 16 through Feb. 15 at the St.Martins Preserve Headquarters Building in Crystal River. The classes are intended to make power boating safer. They're open to adults and children. Classes are free, but there is a charge for course materials. Certificates will be awarded to those who complete the course.

For information, contact Al Alborano, (352) 637-7293.

BRENTWOOD GOLF: Larry Cresswell and Frank Rizzo claimed the championship in the Dec. 11 two-man best-ball tournament at Brentwood Farms Golf Club.

Bill Kimble finished second, followed by Bob Rondeau and Bob Lane, Bill Shepherd and Bob Wanser and Tom Bonner and Dick Hawkins.

WORKSHOP: Citrus County Parks and Recreation will have golf club workshops Jan.16 and Jan.18 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Beverly Hills Community Building.

Jim Goodwillie, a club maker for 19 years who's a Class A member of The Professional Clubmaker's Society and an advanced professional of The Golf Clubmaker's Association, will instruct the workshops.

Goodwillie will present information on what golfers need to know in order to select clubs best suited to their game and swing characteristics.

Part of the workshop will be devoted to measuring club specifications for participants.

Registration is required for the $10 workshops, which are limited to 12 students. For more information, call (352) 795-2202.
