Garden Club to meet Jan. 3
The Orange Blossom Garden Club will meet at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 3 at the Lutz Community Center, 100 First Street NW. Refreshments will be served at 9:30 a.m. Bert Bradish, master gardener, will present a program on container gardening. Visitors and prospective members are invited. Art competition entries sought
The Old Hyde Park Art Center, 705 Swann Ave., will accept entries for the "All Media Open Competition" from noon to 3 p.m. Jan. 6-7. The competition will feature landscapes and seascapes and will be on exhibit Jan. 9-26. Each two-dimensional work must be framed, glazed and wired for hanging (no saw-toothed hangers) and no piece more than 40 inches square. Three-dimensional pieces should be ready for display. Sculptures should be small enough to be displayed on a stand; no floor pieces or installations. Entry fees are $5 for members, $10 for non-members; limit three pieces per person. An awards reception will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 11. Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded. Center hours are noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. For information, call (813) 251-2780.
Franciscan Center retreat
The Franciscan Center, 3010 Perry Ave., will present a weekend retreat from 7 p.m. Jan. 5 to 1 p.m. Jan. 7. The conscious contact weekend retreat, "The Color of Light," will explore one's spirituality as a vital tool in altering negative mind-sets. The focus will be to empower you with the ability to improve your conscious contact with the God of your understanding, as a source of growth and change through a 12-step program. Adoption meeting offered
Adoption Resources of Florida International, 112 S Armenia Ave., will present a free informational meeting on domestic and international adoptions at 7 p.m. Jan. 3. The public is invited. Meetings are on the first Wednesday of each month. Adoption Resources is a division of MAPS (Maine Adoption Placement Service), a not-for-profit domestic and international adoption agency licensed in Florida. Metropolitan Ministries donations
Metropolitan Ministries is in critical need of donations to give to pre-registered needy families for the holidays. The following items are needed: toys for infants, pre-teens (ages 9-12), and teens, for both boys and girls. Suggested gifts, in the $10-$15 price range, include walkmans, cosmetic sets, watches, wallets, purses, board games and sports equipment. Suggestions for infants include Lil Tykes toys, Playskool toys, rattles, stuffed animals and teething items. Also, food items in short supply include turkeys, mashed potatoes, gelatin dessert, crackers and cookies. Donations may be dropped off at the holiday tent in the 2100 block of N Florida Ave. until 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
